George Butler is an illustrator who works in situ, capturing his surroundings with pen, ink and watercolour paints. His subject matter mainly revolves around current affairs and travel, some of his most well known projects have been in Syria and Afghanistan.
Butler’s work interests me because I get a sense that he really has an interest in the people and scenes he is drawing and cares enough to portray them realistically without being influenced by stories we are fed by the media.
I also think the compositions of his illustrations are interesting because he clearly has to think quickly about what he is putting onto paper, forcing him to be selective, but his final images seem well balanced and considered.

“You’re trying to draw your experience onto that page, whether it’s sound or movement, the fact it was too cold or too sunny or the man moved too quickly or it was too dangerous and you felt nervous. All the marks you’re making are influenced by what’s happening.”
George Butler
