Reportager Blog

I have been looking at the reportager blog quite a lot recently. I love the immediacy and haste of the drawings done on location because it shows the struggle the illustrator is going through to capture the contents of a scene that is playing out in front of them.

These drawings are by Harry Morgan. I like his use of spot colours and his hasty mark making.

This is are some sketchbook pages by Alex Nicholson. The use of text here helps to create more of a picture of what was happening. It explains the facial expressions of the people in the drawing and the relationship between the characters.

I think confidence with line is really important in reportage illustration as you need to know that the marks you are putting onto paper are worth the valuable time they are costing you. You need to be quick at selecting the key points from the scene and getting this information down onto paper, and cutting out insignificant parts which are unnecessary to the point you’re making.
