The Illustrated Self - Final images and evaluation

Final Images

Something that tasted good. My cooking.

Something I heard. Advice from professionals.

Something I wore. I wore myself out.

Somewhere I found myself. At my laptop. Blogging. A lot.

Something I discovered. The difference between drawing and illustration.

Something that made me happy. Meeting new people.

Something I'd rather not have done. Played it safe.

Something I have been thinking about. My knowledge of the world.

Something beautiful. Yorkshire.

Something scary. The prospect of second year being even more challenging.

Evaluation

I am pleased with the points I have managed to make with my images here and I think it provides a strong contrast to my response to the same brief from last summer. I think the images work well as a set visually and conceptually because I have used the same techniques and have involved an element of me in each image to tie it all together as my experiences.

The printing quality of my final images in this submissions are not of a standard I am happy with. The colours have not been represented accurately which is because I used the studio printer and not the proper print facilities. I will make sure that my images are printed in higher quality for the exhibition.

I wanted to keep my colour choice simple but I got a bit carried away with making them all different. I think the muted tones of the colours ties them all together but I could have put more time and effort into my consideration of colour. This has been true for a lot of my work this year as colour is something I only really think about in the later stages of a brief.

Plans for Exhibition

For the exhibition, I plan to make my ten illustrations into a concertina book about my first year as an illustration student. For this, I will need to develop a front and back cover for the book and use InDesign to lay out my images and subheadings the way I want them. I may go back into Photoshop and reconsider my colour choices to make them work together more, I am considering making all of the colours paler to give the images a more subtle look with more of a focus on the line work. I will get this printed in higher quality so that the outcome looks more professional and refined.
