Becoming an AOI Member

Earlier in the module I noted down some agencies and contact details of people within these agencies who I could send my work to but I kept putting off contacting them. I have come to the decision that I actually don’t want an agent and if I take my self promotion seriously and use my online presence effectively, I don’t think I really need one. I am a bit of a control freak and I think that I would feel better finding and deciding on which projects I want to take on. The only thing I am worried about with this is the pricing and legal support I would be missing out on by not having an agent. This is why I have decided to join the AOI.

So, instead of contacting agencies I think the best thing for me to do is to be contacting design teams, magazines and publishing houses directly. Although I feel my work is appropriate for editorial and book illustration work, I don’t feel like I have anything relevant enough yet to send out to people who could potentially commission me for it. This is the aim of my final major project, to build up a stronger portfolio specifically centred around the kind of jobs I want to get.
