I have spoken quite a bit about running my own online shop in the future and wanted to explain why I haven't got one up and running at the moment. I have an easy shop which I have had for over a year now but have received very few sales. Most of the things I have sold have been to people who know me directly and prefer to buy directly from me rather than through the online process.
Reasons why my shop isn't working…
- I usually upload my stock as and when which I don’t think is a good idea. Uploading stock in dribs and drabs has very little impact and barely constitutes a social media post about ‘new stock’.
- My work isn't photographed professionally enough.
- I haven’t got enough products for sale and there is not a wide enough range of content to retain peoples attention.
What am I going to do?
- I am going to use the next few months to build up a proper stock of products.
- As well as making prints and cards which I can do myself, send some designs off to be made into other products like stickers, pocket mirrors, hardback notebooks, etc.
- Build up interest in the stock I have available on my social media platforms and have a ‘release date’ where the listings go live. I have seen this done by practitioners I follow and they seem to generate a lot more excitement about it.
- Also, think seasonal! Always be working six months in advance of events so I have stock for valentines day, mothers day, christmas, etc ready for when the demand is high.
